Tolo School Dance DJ Scott Fijolek
HISTORY: At some schools, this type of dance is called TWIRP, which stands for The Woman Is Required (or Requested) to Pay. If held during the winter months, the Sadie Hawkins dance may be called the Snow Ball or some other wintry name. In a variation on pure Sadie Hawkins custom, a particular song may be designated a snowball dance by the DJ or master of ceremonies.
In that case, also known as “speed dancing” (because of its similarities to speed dating), the DJ picks two people to start dancing, usually to a slow dance. Periodically the DJ will shout, “snowball,” signaling that the dancers must find new partners, thus increasing the number of partners on the floor. Half of the people asking new dancers to come to the floor will be girls asking boys, Sadie Hawkins-style. By the end of the song, most of the people at the dance are on the dance floor. The “snowball dance” is typically used to get the dancing started. In some areas, people chosen to dance cannot refuse, thereby ensuring people get onto the dance floor, and thus the “snowball” gains momentum and grows. In the Pacific Northwest similar dances are known as tolos. It has been suggested that tolo comes from a Chinook Jargon word for “to win”. In Utah, the dance is provincially known as “Preference” and the rule is that the girl must ‘tag’ her date. Tagging is not allowed on campus, so boys will hide in bedrooms and attics after school to prolong being caught. This is traditionally the largest dance of the High School calendar.

2011 Port Orchard Party
Port Orchard Party planners expect lively night at skating rink
Nov 11 2011
The 22nd annual Port Orchard Party has moved to Sk8town this year.
Why?
To liven up the party, of course.
“We wanted to spice things up and try something new,” said Fathoms O’ Fun chairman Helene Jensen.
This year’s party will be held Nov. 19 at 1501 SE Piperberry Way. In years past, the annual fundraising event was held at Towne Square Mall.
Though the mall was a nice place to hold the event, Jensen said throwing the party at a local skating rink is perfect change of pace.
“Variety makes for a good party,” Jensen said.
This year’s party is a benefit for the Fathoms O’ Fun festival and the South Kitsap High School band, which will perform at the party. The band is raising money to fly to Hawaii for a performance at a Pearl Harbor anniversary commemoration.
The Port Orchard Party features a Mardi Gras theme. The band Soulstice will perform dance music, while DJ Scott Fijolek will emcee the event. A special, secret guest affiliated with the classic rock group War will also perform, Jensen said.
The party runs from 7-11 p.m., and tickets cost $40 per person, which includes all food, music and entertainment. A no-host bar will be available. Individuals must be 21 to attend.
Jensen is hoping for a crowd of over 200 partiers. She thinks a new location, a lavish theme, and live music make the night a can’t-miss.
“Everyone gets to be kings and queens for a night,” Jensen said.
